Approved Institutions: Where Can You Study?

DTEF sponsorship is not valid everywhere. Learn about the importance of selecting an accredited and approved tertiary institution.

A critical component of eligibility for government sponsorship in Botswana is the institution you choose to attend. The Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF) will not sponsor a student to attend just any college. You must be admitted to an institution and a program that is officially recognized and approved by the government.

Why Does the DTEF Restrict Institutions?

The government invests heavily in tertiary education to build a skilled workforce that aligns with the country's economic development goals. Therefore, they only sponsor programs that meet national quality standards as verified by the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA). This protects students from wasting time at unaccredited 'fly-by-night' colleges and ensures taxpayer money is spent on legitimate education.

Types of Approved Institutions

The approved list generally covers three main categories:

  • Public Universities: The premier institutions in the country, such as the University of Botswana (UB), Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), and Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN). Sponsorship is highly guaranteed for eligible students admitted here.
  • Public Colleges & Institutes: This includes the Institutes of Health Sciences (IHS), Colleges of Education, and various technical colleges across the country.
  • Accredited Private Institutions: The DTEF also sponsors students at numerous private institutions (e.g., Botho University, Limkokwing University, Ba Isago), provided their specific degree or diploma programs hold current BQA accreditation.

External Sponsorship (Studying Abroad)

Historically, the DTEF offered extensive sponsorship for students to study internationally. However, due to the growth of local institutions and budget constraints, external sponsorship is now highly restricted. It is generally reserved for Top Achievers (students with exceptional BGCSE results) or for highly specialized medical and engineering programs that are not currently offered at local Botswana universities.

How to Verify Your Institution

Before you apply through the online portal, you must be certain your admission letter is valid for sponsorship.

The DTEF publishes an updated list of approved institutions and programs prior to the opening of the application cycle. This list is usually available on their official website (tef.gov.bw) or their official Facebook page. Never assume a program is sponsored just because it was sponsored last year; policies change, and you must verify the current year's list to avoid rejection.
